Our Mutual Friend

When an heir faces an unwanted marriage and threats to his life, he disappears and assumes a new identity. Returning as a secretary to the family that inherits his estate, he quietly observes the woman he was meant to marry amid tangled romances, social divisions, ambition, and danger in Victorian London.

My take

You’ll likely enjoy this if you want richly acted Victorian romance, social drama, and mystery with many intersecting characters; Not for you if you prefer brisk pacing, simple plots, or consistently clear dialogue.
