City of God

In the poverty-stricken neighborhoods of 1970s Rio de Janeiro, two young men take very different paths as drug-related violence grows around them. An aspiring photographer tries to find a safer future while documenting his community, as an ambitious criminal rises through its dangerous underworld.

My take

You’ll like this if you want an intense, immersive crime story about survival and ambition, with vivid characters and a strong sense of place; Not for you if relentless violence and a bleak mood make for too difficult a watch.
